Do Uber drivers need to track mileage?

If you drive as a self-employed Uber driver and claim vehicle expenses, you need records supporting business use. A mileage log helps you explain where, when and why you drove. An app can make the recordkeeping easier, but you still need to review the trips.

Start a mileage log before your first shift

  1. Record your starting odometer and keep a record of total annual vehicle mileage.
  2. Keep each trip’s date, distance and business purpose.
  3. Separate personal driving and review your classifications regularly.
  4. Export records and keep relevant receipts together.

Does turning on Uber make every mile deductible?

No. Ordinary commuting is generally personal travel, and eligibility depends on the trip’s purpose and your circumstances. Simply having a driving app open does not establish a deduction.
